Why we Shouldn’t Use Bio-Plastic Straws

Bio-plastic or green plastic are ‘eco-friendly’?

Bio-plastic or green plastic are produced through renewable sources like rice, corn, etc. with addition of compounds like poly lactic acid(PLA).

These plastics are claimed to be biodegradable in nature, however they can only be degraded in commercial facilities under certain temperatures. To recycle these plastics, they should be sorted out from each other. This process is done through specialized equipment that not all processing facilities have.

Furthermore, often bio-plastics require petroleum based plastics as an additive. Hence, just like regular plastic, bio-plastic although known as ‘eco-friendly’ causes threat to the environment.
